history

The path laid out around 1860 on the edge of the Schütte, a slope between Waisenhausplatz and the Grabenpromenade , was named Schüttestrasse by the Bern municipal council on November 19, 1877. Previously it was unofficially called Schüttenweg. The name Schütte is a reminder that after the city fire of 1405, which destroyed almost two thirds of the city, the rubble was poured onto the north-facing slope of the Aare . Since then, in contrast to the southern Aare slope, this slope has had an even gradient and hardly any hollows. The pedestrian underpass at the New Girls School was built in 1968/69.
