history

With the construction of the Great Schanze in the first half of the Thirty Years' War, a street was built above the outer wall, the moat in front of the 4th city fortification, which reached from today's Burgerspital to the Aarbergertor. At the beginning of the 19th century it was called Kleine Zeughaus- or Bollwerkstrass. Often, however, they were combined with today's Genfergasse and called the whole bulwark.

After the fourth city fortification was razed in the 1830s, the street that began on Spitalgasse was called Äusseres Bollwerk. From 1835 to 1840 the houses on the east side were built, and those on the west side were built between 1856 and 1861. In 1895, the pavement between Neuen- and Aarbergergasse was paved. In 1903 the inner bulwark was given its name, Genfergasse, which is still in use today. The name of the outer bulwark was subsequently abbreviated to the name bulwark.

The Schallenhaus , the first prison in Switzerland, was one of the earlier buildings on the bulwark .
