history
In the last quarter of the 14th century, Speichergasse Hintere Gass was called genempt Buobengass , and occasionally Schegkenbrunnengasse after the well on the Schegko family's property. In 1552 the street was given its current name for the first time. As a result, the street underwent various name changes. In the 18th century it was called Vordere Speichergasse and in the Helvetic era the name Waisengasse was named after the nearby boy orphanage and after the girls' orphanage in the west wing of the house at Speichergasse 6. After 1803, the Speichergasse was given its original name again. After the large prison was demolished in 1894, Speichergasse was extended beyond Genfergasse to the bulwark.
