history

The Christoffelturm around 1860

For a long time a path led south along the moat in front of the 4th city fortification. At the beginning of the 19th century it was called Aarzihleweg and also included today's Bundesrain. The 1st Bern construction company laid out Christoffelgasse shortly after it was founded (1852). Originally it was planned to name Christoffelgasse south of Bundesgasse Bernerhofgasse. However, since the Kleine Schanze was not built over subsequently , this project was canceled. The ditch was not leveled until 1878 and passed from the state to the municipality in 1917. At the beginning of the 1860s, Christoffelgasse received two asphalt sidewalks.

Earlier names of the alley
