John Nevins Andrews (born July 22, 1829 in Poland , Maine , † October 21, 1883 in Basel ) was an American travel preacher , Bible theologian and president of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists (SDA). He is considered the first missionary of the SDA.

Vita

Even as a teenager he is said to have been strictly religious and had an incredible knowledge of the Bible. In 1843, his parents joined the apocalyptic movement of Baptist minister William Miller . Andrews was ordained in 1853 and married in 1856. After spending some time on his parents' farm, Andrews devoted himself to preaching in 1859. In 1861 he published the History of the Sabbath . He was President of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church from 1867 to 1869. During the American Civil War, he positioned Adventists on the non-combatant position.

In 1874 John Nevins Andrews was sent to Europe as a missionary for the Advent Message and settled in Basel. In 1883 he died of tuberculosis and was buried in the Wolfgottesacker in Basel .
