history

The original grant for the Bakerstown Plantation was given in 1765 by the Massachusetts General Court to Captain Thomas Baker and other soldiers for service in the Battle of Québec in 1690. Bakerstown Plantation became independent as Poland on February 17, 1798. The settlement was named Poland in 1795 after a leader of an Indian tribe . From this area Minot was founded on February 18, 1802 as an independent town. The border between these towns was the Little Androscoggin River. In 1893 Mechanic Falls was founded as an independent town from this area.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Poland became known as a health resort for its mineral springs. After the Second World War, the era of fashionable spa hotels in Poland came to an end. The Poland Spring mineral water brand is now owned by Nestlé , which sells groundwater from Poland under this brand.

On September 22, 1978, one of the worst aircraft accidents in Maine during the Cold War took place over Poland. A United States Navy Patrol Squadron 8 bomber , stationed at Naval Air Station Brunswick , broke in the air over Poland. Overpressure in the fuel tank caused one wing of the Lockheed P-3 Orion to tear off. It sheared off part of the stern and aerodynamic forces then detached the remaining engines and the starboard wing from the fuselage. The debris fell on Route 11 near the Tripp Corner intersection shortly after noon. No houses were hit, but the fuel-air mixture caused an explosion on impact that damaged the windows of the neighboring houses. None of the eight-person crew on the plane survived the accident.

Poland is the birthplace of John Nevins Andrews , an Adventist missionary, Bert Fernald , Senator and Governor of Maine from 1909 to 1911, and the martial artist Amanda Buckner .
