history
The area of the town, together with the town of Monmouth, belonged to the Plantation of Wales before 1792. At that point, Monmouth was spun off and in 1803 the rest was reorganized as a plantation under the old name. The incorporation of Wales was made by the Massachusetts General Court on February 1, 1816.
The first settler in the area was James Ross from Brunswick in 1778. He settled on the western side of Sabattus Mountain. From 1780, more settlers reached the area. In 1758 Joseph Small was captured by Indians and taken to Québec . He was held there until the conquest of Québec by General James Wolfe .
The first grist mill was built in 1800 and the first meeting house, a union house, was built in the center of town in 1826. A Baptist church was organized in 1831.
A small portion of the Leeds area was added to the Town of Wales in 1852. On the southeast side of the northern foothills of the Sabattus Mountains is a low cave that extends about fifty meters deep. Their width is significantly smaller. In the rock there is mica slate heavily interspersed with iron and sulfur. Red ocher and iron ore can also be found in the cave. The soil is good arable soil.
