history

The town of Auburn was founded in 1786 on the right bank of the Androscoggin River , just opposite the settlement Lewiston . The two settlements were connected to one another to a large extent from the beginning, so that one speaks of the "twin cities" of Maine. Auburn was recognized as an independent town in 1842, and it was elevated to a city in 1868 after land from some of the surrounding towns was incorporated into Auburn's urban area.

Auburn, like most places in Maine, lived on its wood mills until the mid-19th century . French settlers, who were very successful as shoemakers, also settled here early on. However, when they established the first US shoe factory in the city in 1835 , Auburn quickly became the center of the shoe industry. Even today, the city still lives primarily from its shoe production.

The economic development also benefited from the development by the railroad. The Androscoggin and Kennebec Railway overland tram linked the centers of Bath, Auburn, Lewiston and Augusta from 1908. The Portland – Lewiston Interurban Railroad connected Portland with Lewiston as Interurban from 1914 to 1933. Today the Cumberland Center – Bangor railway maintains a station in Auburn.
