history
The town was founded under the name Royalsborough after David Dunning bought six square miles of land for £ 33 on November 14, 1761 for the purpose. The city was then named after Isaac Royal , a British general. The actual settlement of the site did not begin until a few years after the land was purchased. A miller named Samuel Gerrish is considered to be the first settler in 1769. The area was then forested and had to be cleared before houses and roads could be built. In 1776 there were 25 settlers in what is now Durham. In 1778 Durham received its town charter under its current name. At that time around 700 people in 70 families lived there.
