Ponwal's history is linked to Freeport. The area was first settled in 1680. Town Pownal was founded on March 3, 1808 when it was separated from Town Freeport. Ponwal was named after the former governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay Thomas Pownall , who had died 3 years earlier.

With a hilly surface and generally good arable land, agriculture became the main economic factor. Later a flour mill and a carriage factory were built.

Parks

Bradbury Mountain State Park is located in the center of the town and was established as one of the first five state parks by the state government in 1939.
