Pownal is a town in Cumberland County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1,474 inhabitants in 613 households on an area of 59.2 km². Bradbury Mountain State Park is located in Pownal.

Geographical location
Pownal is in the east of Cumberland County. The Chandler Brook flows in a south-westerly direction through the area of the town, it flows into the Royal River . There are no lakes in Pownal. The surface of the area is flat. The highest point is the centrally located 158 m high Mount Bradbury .

history
Ponwal's history is linked to Freeport. The area was first settled in 1680. Town Pownal was founded on March 3, 1808 when it was separated from Town Freeport. Ponwal was named after the former governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay Thomas Pownall , who had died 3 years earlier.
With a hilly surface and generally good arable land, agriculture became the main economic factor. Later a flour mill and a carriage factory were built.

Parks
Bradbury Mountain State Park is located in the center of the town and was established as one of the first five state parks by the state government in 1939. The park covers an area of 800 acres (3.24 km²), which is mostly forested. The state park is located on the slopes of the Bradbury Mountains.

Maine State Route 9 runs through Pownal from the southeast to the northwest . The Interstate 295 passes through the adjacent Freeport.
