Raymond is a town in Cumberland County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 4436 inhabitants in 2852 households on an area of 115.9 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , the place has a total area of 115.9 km 2 , of which 85.9 km 2 are land and 30.0 km 2 consist of water .
Geographical location
Raymond is on the northeastern shore of Sebago Lake . It has a long cape that protrudes into the lake. At the end of this cape is Frye Island . The area enclosed by this cape is called Jordan Bay. The surface of the town is hilly and the 299 m high Rattlesnake Mountain is the highest point. There are several large lakes which are partly or completely in the area of the town. The largest is Panther Pond, which is located entirely on the town's territory, with Thomas Pond in the south-west and Crescent Lake in the north-west . The Raymond Pond is in the north and the Notched Pond borders in the northeast .

history
The land was given by the Massachusetts Bay Colony as a grant to Captain William Raymond and his men in 1767 in gratitude for their service at the Battle of Québec under Sir William Phips . Until the town of Casco was founded in 1841, it also belonged to the town of Raymond. Captain Joseph Dingley began settling Raymond in 1771, but few families settled here until after the revolution. The town was founded on June 21, 1803 and took the name of Captain Raymonds.
On the Panther River, water mills were built for the processing and production of wood and staves, grain mills and a plaster factory as well as a factory for the production of children's sleds. Raymond is located north of Portland on the Maine Central Railroad . Nathaniel Hawthorne , the novelist , also lived in Raymond .
The WGME transmission mast is in Raymond . At 493.5 m in height, it was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion. Since the completion of the WMTW transmission tower in Baldwin, it is now the second tallest structure in Maine.

The US Highway 302 runs through the southwest of the Town. It connects Raymond with Portland in the south and Bridgton in the north. In a north-south direction, Maine State Route 121 and Maine State Route 85 continue to the east .
