history

New England 18.svg

From 1922 to 1935, most of the highway was part of the old New England Interstate road system as New England Interstate Route 18 (NE-18) from Portland, Maine, northwest to Littleton , New Hampshire (approximately 179 km). From Littleton west to Montpelier in Vermont, today's highway and the former interstate have different courses. The former Interstate ran further north along what is now New Hampshire Highway 18 and Vermont State Route 18 to St. Johnsbury (parallel along Interstate 93 ), then along US Highway 2 to Montpelier.

Today's highway runs along a more southerly route, using intersections of the former New England Interstate Routes. From Littleton it runs along the New England Interstate Route 10 to Woodsville , then along the former New England Route 25 to Montpelier.
