history

Superior Court

The area of today's St. Johnsbury was proclaimed as part of the neighboring state of New Hampshire for settlement as early as 1760 under the name "Bessborough", but this did not lead to any notable success. It was not until 1786 that it was advertised again for reclamation under the name "Dunmore", this time from Vermont, and settled from the following year. The administrative structure was established in 1790; on this occasion the settlement was given its current name. It was named after Jean de Créveœur, a friend of Benjamin Franklin and a supporter of revolutionary America. At that time there were 143 people living in the St. Johnsbury area.

In 1856, St. Johnsbury was named a county seat instead of Danville . At that time the city was developing into an industrial center for the area; in addition, it became a railway junction.

The public library, a foundation owned by Horace Fairbanks , a city entrepreneur and temporarily governor of Vermont, was expanded with its own art gallery in 1873. This facility is still preserved in its original form today under the name "Athenaeum". The “Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium” has also been preserved in its Victorian architecture and still gives evidence of the city's self-image as the cultural and technological center of New England during this period.
