Early years
Lemuel Arnold was the son of Jonathan Arnold , who had been a member of the Continental Congress between 1782 and 1783 . He studied at Dartmouth College in Vermont until 1811 . When riots broke out in Providence, they were violently suppressed by the governor.
After losing the gubernatorial elections of 1833 to John Brown Francis , he retired from politics for a few years. In the years 1842 and 1843 he was a member of the government council. During this time, the so-called Dorr Rebellion fell , a rebellion led by Thomas Dorr to extend the right to vote to citizens without property. For this he was elected to the House of Representatives, in which he represented the interests of his state between March 4, 1845 and March 3, 1847.
