James M. Pendleton
James Monroe Pendleton (born January 10, 1822 in North Stonington , Connecticut , † February 16, 1899 in Westerly , Rhode Island ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the second constituency of the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Pendleton attended schools in North Stonington and Suffield , also in Connecticut. After moving to Westerly, Rhode Island, he began working in commerce. Later he also worked in the banking and insurance business.
Politically, Pendleton was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1862 and 1865 he was a member of the Rhode Island Senate . In 1868 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Ulysses S. Grant was nominated as the party's presidential candidate. In 1870 Pendleton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second district of Rhode Island . There he replaced Nathan Dixon II on March 4, 1871 . After a re-election in 1872 Pendleton was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 .
In the elections of 1874 he was defeated by Latimer Whipple Ballou . Between 1879 and 1884, James Pendleton was an MP in the Rhode Island House of Representatives . He then was until 1889 chairman of the Rhode Island Welfare Committee. He died in Westerly in February 1889.
