John Francis "Jack" Reed (born November 12, 1949 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the United States Senate as a representative of Rhode Islands since his election in 1996 .

Youth and early career

Reed went to school at La Salle Academy in Providence and then attended the United States Military Academy at West Point . There he graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science . He received his Masters from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . In the military , he served in the 82nd Airborne Division as an Army Ranger and Paratrooper .

Law and politics

Reed left the Army in 1979 as a captain and then attended Harvard Law School . He graduated there in 1982 and then worked at Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan in Washington . Shortly thereafter, he moved back to Rhode Island to work at Edwards and Angell . In 1984 he managed to win a seat in the Rhode Island Senate , where he stayed until 1990. In 1990 he moved into the US House of Representatives for the state . He was particularly known for campaigning for state welfare in the areas of education and health care. When Senator Claiborne Pell announced that he would not run again, Reed ran for the office. He won the election as well as his re-elections in 2002, 2008 and 2014 with ease.

Reed sits in the Senate Armed Services Committee , the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and is a member of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions .

The Americans for Democratic Action have called Reed a "hero" on several occasions for being one of the most liberal voters in the Senate.
