Sheldon Whitehouse
Sheldon Whitehouse (born October 20, 1955 in New York City ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Since 2007 he has been a member of the US Senate as a representative of the state of Rhode Island .
Life
Sheldon Whitehouse, whose father Charles S. Whitehouse was the United States Ambassador to Laos and Thailand , attended St. Paul's School in Concord , New Hampshire , a private boarding school. He graduated from Yale University in 1978 and the University of Virginia School of Law , where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1982 . He has been married to marine biologist Sandra Thornton Whitehouse since 1986. The couple has two children.
Professional and political career
Whitehouse served as Legal Associate to Justice Richard Neely at the West Virginia State Supreme Court from 1982 to 1983 . From 1983 to 1990 he held various positions in the office of the Attorney General of Rhode Island. Since 1991 he has worked for the then Governor of Rhode Island, Bruce Sundlun , who appointed him director of the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation in 1992 . In 1994, US President Bill Clinton appointed Whitehouse to the Rhode Island federal prosecutor . He was elected Attorney General of the State of Rhode Island in 1998 and served from 1999 to 2003. In 2002 he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic candidacy for governorship in Rhode Island, which went by a narrow margin to State Senator Myrth York . She then lost the actual election to Republican Donald Carcieri .
Whitehouse was a successful candidate for the US Senate in Rhode Island in 2006. As a Democratic candidate, he defeated incumbent Lincoln Chafee , who left the Republican Party a short time later and became the state's independent governor in 2011. In the Senate, Whitehouse is a member of the Judiciary Committee and the Budget Committee .
Political positions
Sheldon Whitehouse supports abortion rights ( Pro-Choice ) and same-sex marriage rights. He advocates state funding for research on embryonic stem cells . He advocates the death penalty at the federal level, but not in the individual states and not for offenders who are minors.
