LeBaron Bradford Colt

LeBaron Bradford Colt (born  June 25, 1846 in Dedham , Norfolk County , Massachusetts , †  August 18, 1924 in Bristol , Rhode Island ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Rhode Island in the US Senate represented. He also served as a federal judge at the Federal District Court and at the Federal Court of Appeals .

Life

After attending school, Colt attended Williston Seminary, a prep school for college in Easthampton . In 1868 he passed his bachelor's degree from Yale University before graduating from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Laws in 1870 .

After returning from a year-long trip to Europe, he was admitted to the bar and began practicing as a lawyer in Chicago . In 1875 he moved to Bristol, Rhode Island; he continued his practice as a lawyer in Providence .

Activity as a judge

On March 9, 1881, Colt was appointed by US President James A. Garfield to succeed John Power Knowles as a judge at the Federal District Court for the District of Rhode Island . The US Senate confirmed it shortly afterwards. Garfield's successor Chester A. Arthur appointed him three years later to the United States Circuit Court , where he took the place of the resigned John Lowell . In 1891 he finally became a judge at the newly created federal appeals court for the 1st district with jurisdiction for the states of Maine , Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island as well as Puerto Rico .

Political career

Colt was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1879 to 1881 . In 1913 he was elected to the US Senate by the General Assembly of the state. There he succeeded the Republican George P. Wetmore , who had prevailed against his younger brother Samuel P. Colt as an internal party opponent in the 1907 election . After the election, he resigned from his position as judge.

In the Senate he was chairman of the Committee for the Conservation of Natural Resources from 1917 to 1919. From 1919 until his death in 1924 he chaired the committee responsible for immigration. He was buried in the Juniper Hill Cemetery in Bristol.
