Nehemiah Rice Knight (born December 31, 1780 in Cranston , Rhode Island , † April 18, 1854 in Providence , Rhode Island) was an American politician and Governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1817 to 1821 . Between 1821 and 1841 he represented his state in the US Senate .

Early years and political advancement

Nehemiah Rice attended public schools in his home country. In 1802 he was elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives. After moving to Providence, he was clerk at the court of appeal between 1805 and 1811. From 1812 to 1817 he carried out the same activity at the district court. At the same time he was tax collector for the state of Rhode Island with the federal tax authority. In 1817 Knight was elected as the new governor of his state as a candidate of his Democratic Republican Party against the incumbent William Jones .

Rhode Island Governor and Senator

Nehemiah Knight took office on May 7, 1817. After he was confirmed in this office in the following years, he remained head of government of Rhode Island until January 9, 1821. As governor, he campaigned for the introduction of a general public school system. The issue of extending the right to vote also played an important role in Rhode Island during these years.

After the death of US Senator James Burrill , Knight was elected as his successor to Congress . He then resigned as governor. In the years 1823, 1829 and 1835 Nehemiah Knight was served as a senator. During this time his party had disbanded; Knight was then a member of the National Republican Party and later the Whigs . Overall, he was a US Senator between January 9, 1821 and March 3, 1841. There he was chairman of the committee for the control of current expenses as well as a member of the craftsmen's committee ( Committee on Manufacturers ).

Another résumé

In 1843, Knight was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Rhode Island constitution. From 1817 to 1854 he was President of the Roger Williams Bank . Nehemiah Knight died on April 20, 1854. He was married to Lydia Waterman.
