Daniel Russell Brown (born March 28, 1848 in Bolton , Tolland County , Connecticut , † February 28, 1919 in Providence , Rhode Island ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1892 to 1895 .

Early years and political advancement

Daniel Brown attended public schools in his home country. Then he worked in a hardware store. He later became the sales manager of one such store in Hartford . After moving to Providence, he became a partner in a company that sold spare parts for weaving mills. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In 1872 he was elected to Providence City Council, where he remained for four years. In 1885 he turned down his candidacy for the office of mayor of that city. In the 1888 presidential election he was one of Benjamin Harrison's electors .

Governor of Rhode Island

In 1892 he was elected the new governor of his state. He was re-elected in 1893 by the legislature because there was no clear majority in the election. His third election in 1894 was again on the regular route. Overall, he was between May 31, 1892 and May 29, 1895 Governor of Rhode Island. During this time, the state constitution was reformed. In future elections, the relative majority of the votes was sufficient for an election victory. Also during his tenure, free textbooks were introduced in schools and the state's road network expanded.

In 1896, Brown was brought up for discussion by the New England states as a candidate for the vice presidency. The nomination alongside William McKinley then went to Garret Hobart , who died in 1899. Daniel Brown then returned to his private interests. He died in February 1919. He married Isabel Barrows on October 14, 1874, with whom he had three children, Milton Barrows Brown, Isabel Russell Brown (later Brunschwig) and Hope Caroline Brown (later Chapin). Hope was on board the British liner RMS Carpathia in April 1912 when it was rescuing the survivors of the sinking of the RMS Titanic .
