Seth Padelford (born October 3, 1807 in Taunton , Massachusetts , †  August 26, 1878 in Providence , Rhode Island ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1869 to 1873 .

Early years and political advancement

After finishing school, Seth Padelford worked in retail and as a Providence councilor. In this city he was also a member of the school board; later he became a member of the House of Representatives from Rhode Island . Seth Padelford was a staunch opponent of slavery . Before the Civil War , he supported the movement to abolish this institution in Kansas . In 1860 he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Rhode Island. In 1863 and 1864 he was elected vice governor of his state.

In 1869, Padelford was elected the new governor of his state. After three successful re-elections in the following years, he was able to remain in this office between May 25, 1869 and May 27, 1873. As governor, he campaigned for an improved education policy. The corresponding budget was quadrupled during his tenure.

For four years after the end of his governorship, he served on the commission that administered the state's repayment fund. He was also involved in various public associations and organizations. Seth Padelford died in August 1878. He was married twice and had two children.
