Jeremiah Thurston
Jeremiah Thurston (* 1768 in Hopkinton , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † March 22, 1830 ibid) was an American politician . In 1816 and 1817 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Rhode Island .
Career
Jeremiah Thurston's father, George Thurston (1741-1827) served in the American armed forces during the Revolutionary War and was later brigadier general in the state militia. In Hopkinton he ran a goods store, in which his son participated from 1794. The company was then called George Thurston & Son . Later, the younger Thurston took over the company, which then Jeremiah Thurston & Co . called. After his death, the company was continued by his son Benjamin (1804-1886), who was also Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island in 1837 and 1838 and also represented his state in Congress .
Politically, Thurston joined the Federalist Party . In 1815 he was elected lieutenant governor of Rhode Island alongside Nehemiah R. Knight . He held this office between 1816 and 1817. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. He returned to his business and died on March 22, 1830.
