Charles Collins (politician)

Charles Collins (born 1773 in Warren , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , †  June 9, 1845 ) was an American politician . Between 1824 and 1833 he was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Rhode Island .

Career

The sources on Charles Collins are very poor. It is certain that he was a ship's captain and as such was involved in the slave trade. He was also a co-owner of a ship called the Amistad that carried slaves. His political party affiliation is not given in the sources. Between 1804 and 1820 he was head of the federal customs service in native Bristol County .

In 1824, Collins was elected Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island alongside James Fenner . He held this office between 1824 and 1833. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . From 1831 he served under the new governor Lemuel H. Arnold . After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. He died on June 9, 1845.
