Warren (also Rehoboth ) is a municipality in Bristol County in the US state of Rhode Island . It is 8.6 square miles (22.4 km²) and had 10,611 inhabitants according to the 2010 census . The parish is named after the 18th century British Admiral Sir Peter Warren .

Geography, traffic

Warren is located on the northeast bank of Narraganset Bay and on the east bank of the Warren directly at its confluence with the bay. The city is located about 9.3 miles (15 km) southeast of the capital Providence and about 6.9 miles (11.1 km) from Fall River , Massachusetts . Neighboring communities are Bristol to the south, Barrington to the west on the opposite bank of the Warren, and Swansea , Massachusetts, to the north and east .

Warren is a little off the main routes between Providence and Fall River. The Interstate 195 extends approximately 3.2 miles (5.15 km) north of the village, a little further south parallel to the US Route 6 . The state border with Massachusetts runs about halfway up the highway.

The former railway lines to Providence, Bristol and Fall River have been dismantled. The East Bay Bike Path runs along the route from Providence to Bristol .

history

The Wampanoag village of Sowams , whose sachem was the well-known Massasoit , originally stood on the site of today's village . Contacts with the Pilgrim Fathers in Plymouth , 57 km away , existed shortly after they landed. The settlement was destroyed twice by the effects of war, once in the Pequot War in 1637 and then in the War of Independence in 1775.

The predominant branches of industry changed roughly every 50 years. In the middle of the 18th century it was whaling , in the first half of the 19th century shipbuilding, in the second half of that century the textile industry. Since 1947 it has been shipbuilding again, especially for ferries, fishing cutters and yachts.
