Nathan Miller attended private school as a boy. He then embarked on a professional career as a businessman and in shipbuilding. He also began to be politically active during the British colonial period: from 1772 to 1774 he was a member of the General Assembly , the parliament of Rhode Island. Further terms of office followed there after independence was achieved in 1780, 1782, 1783 and 1790.

In the Rhode Island militia , Miller rose to brigadier general after many years of service, with military responsibility for Newport County and Bristol Counties. Eventually he was elected for his state to the Continental Congress, which was then meeting in New York City . He performed his mandate from July 14 to November 3, 1786; although he was re-elected, he did not participate in the sessions of the congress again. In 1790, Miller served as a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention; in the same year he died in his hometown Warren. He was buried in Kickamuet Cemetery .
