Grosse attended the sculpture class at the Dresden Academy from 1843 and then studied painting with Eduard Bendemann . He made wall and ceiling paintings in the ballroom of the Dresden Residenzschloss as well as ceiling paintings in the Dresden picture gallery . His first large painting Leda with the Swan was acquired by the Dresden gallery.

For the villa , which was built in the neo-renaissance style by the Leipzig publisher Hermann Härtel (1803-1875) from 1832 to 1834 , he created several frescoes in 1855 that are reminiscent of Pompeian wall decorations and were also published in print under the name Penaten . From 1855 to 1858 he created murals about the family history of the Counts Solms-Wildenfels in Wildenfels Castle . Since his works met with great acclaim, the Saxon Academy awarded him a scholarship to travel to Italy, which he set out in 1858. He studied first in Florence and later in Rome the Italian masters of the Renaissance. In Rome he began work on the painting Abraham, Sarah and the three angels , which he completed in 1862 and which came into the possession of Moritz Seeburg's widow in Leipzig. In the same year he received the first prize in the competition for the painting of the loggia of the Leipzig Museum and carried out the work from 1864 to 1872. In addition to this work, he made templates for large, magnificent vases for the porcelain factory in Meissen.

He received an honorary doctorate from Leipzig University and in 1864 became an honorary member of the Dresden Academy . In 1867 he became a member of the Academic Council and was appointed director of an academic master's atelier in Dresden. Numerous paintings on the coffered ceiling of the Dresden Court Theater are Grosses major works in the 1870s. These pictures testify to a sovereign mastery of the compositional art in the style of Raphael and are characterized by the beauty of lines and bright, deep colors.

Grosse helped paint the auditorium of the Meissen Princely School in 1879 . From 1887 to 1888 biblical scenes were created on the balustrades of the Leipzig St. Thomas Church .

Grosse died in Dresden in 1891 and was buried in the Trinitatisfriedhof . In May 1892 part of his estate was auctioned off at an art auction in Dresden. In his memory, his works were exhibited in the Berlin National Gallery from May 8, 1892.
