history

Wildenfels Castle, ancestral hall

The Lords of Wildenfels began building their castle before 1200, which became the seat of the Wildenfels rulership , which they took as a fief from the county of Hartenstein , which was immediately part of the empire . After separating from the county in 1440, Wildenfels was until 1706 a very small but independent Reichsafterlehen which was directly under the Empire and which only included the town of Wildenfels, two villages and six parts of the village. The oldest part of the complex is at the western end of the hill. He was the great hall of a castle , but was later granary rebuilt. The remaining buildings that make up the main part of today's castle were built later. Upstream there are commercial, residential and administrative buildings.

From 1602 to 1945 the castle was owned by the Counts of Solms-Wildenfels . The line of the original noble family ended with the death of Anarg Friedrich von Wildenfels . In the course of this, in 1602 the Wildenfels rule, with all possessions and rights, was transferred to the Solmsche Grafhaus . Especially under Friedrich Magnus I . and his wealthy wife Caroline Sophie von Leiningen-Hartenburg, the small residence developed into a cultural gem of the region. The count couple was fond of free-spirited attitudes and the fine arts and therefore devoted themselves intensively to the renovation of the grounds, the castle park and the contemporary design of the rooms. Since the count was committed to the principles of humanism and enlightened absolutism, in 1776 he founded the Masonic lodge "To the golden apple". Poets, thinkers and painters were invited to the palace. A court of muses was built at the foot of the Ore Mountains. The sons of Friedrich Magnus I kept the family's cultural focus.

In 1945 the castle was expropriated and became public property . Since then, parts of it have been rented out as living space. The castle has been fundamentally repaired since 1990. Some of the buildings are used for public events, weddings and furthermore for living. In addition, there is a branch of the "Clara Wieck" district music school of the Zwickau district and the city library of the city of Wildenfels in the historic walls. In 1998 the non-profit association "Freundeskreis Schloss Wildenfels eV" was founded, which is committed to the restoration of the valuable rooms and furnishings. The silk wallpapers from the 18th century that can be seen in the "Blue Salon" and the "Chinese Cabinet" are unique. These are formerly very widespread, but only extremely rarely preserved wall coverings. Bit by bit, these have been and will be brought back to their former glory.

The front and rear courtyard as well as the castle park are accessible for viewing.
