Bristol is a city in Bristol County , Rhode Island , United States . According to the 2010 census, the population was 22,954.
Bristol was named after the city of the same name in England . It gained national fame through the oldest and longest-running Independence Day celebrations in the United States since 1785. Bristol therefore also bears the title of "America's Most Patriotic City". Bristol's diverse cultural heritage is marked by strong Portuguese-American ( Azores ) and Italian-American influences.
history
In 1675, in the immediate vicinity of what is now Bristol, in Mount Hope , the first battle in King Philip's War was fought . During the Civil War , the city was bombed twice by the British . On October 7, 1775, the Bristolians refused to feed the captain of HMS Rose , whereupon the city was bombarded until an armistice had been set up.
Three years later, on May 25, 1778, 500 British soldiers and German mercenaries destroyed about 30 buildings during their march through and took some prisoners with them to Newport .
In the past three centuries the city was an important hub for rum , slaves and molasses . It acted as a trading point between Africa , the Caribbean Islands and New England .

Bristol has a deep water port . The local industry lives mainly from shipbuilding , which has shaped the city since the 17th century, and tourism . The city's school system is linked to that of neighboring Warren Island .
