Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (born March 18, 1848 in Bristol , Rhode Island , † June 2, 1938 ibid) was an American yacht constructor , designer and boat builder .

Herreshoff was the most successful yacht designer in the history of the America's Cup (AC). Between 1893 and 1920 he built five victorious sailing yachts, which won a total of six times and revolutionized yacht design at the time; today this period is sometimes referred to as the Herreshoff period . As skipper “Capt. Nat “he led some of these large, very expensive and fast yachts in the regattas himself.

Life

After studying mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Herreshoff worked for the Corliss Steam Engine Company . In 1878 he founded the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol on Rhode Island with his brother John Brown Herreshoff . In their shipyard, in addition to sailing yachts , fast steam-powered ships were built, as well as the first torpedo boats of the US Navy .

Herreshoff broke new ground in yacht construction by relying on a maximum length in the waterline and huge sail areas. Large overhangs in the bow and stern areas are characteristic of his designs .

The extreme and largest America's Cup yacht of all time was the Reliance from 1903. It measured around 61 meters (200 feet including bowsprit and boom ) with its protruding spars , could carry 1,500 square meters of sail area and required a crew of 60 to 70 men.
