Isaac Saunders

Isaac Saunders (born November 8, 1808 in Westerly , Rhode Island , †  April 7, 1888 in Scituate , Rhode Island) was an American politician . In 1859 and 1860 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Rhode Island.

Life

Nothing is known about Isaac Saunders' youth and schooling. Professionally, he worked in cotton processing. In 1835 he was a co-founder of Saundersville Mill or the Upper Mill , which he ran with a partner until 1857. This factory turned cotton into clothing fabrics. He lived in North Scituate where he was a respected citizen. In the 1850s he joined the Republican Party , which was then founded . In the presidential elections of 1856 he was the elector for their then nationwide unsuccessful candidate John C. Frémont .

In 1859 Saunders was elected lieutenant governor of Rhode Island alongside Thomas G. Turner . He held this office between 1859 and 1860. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. Isaac Saunders died in Scituate on April 7, 1888.
