J. Joseph Garrahy

John Joseph Garrahy (born November 26, 1930 in Providence , Rhode Island , † January 24, 2012 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1977 to 1985 .

Early years and political advancement

After elementary school, Garrahy studied at the University at Buffalo and then until 1953 at the University of Rhode Island . During the Korean War , he served in the US Air Force from 1953 to 1955 . Between 1963 and 1969 he was a member of the Rhode Island Senate . At that time he was also chairman of the Democratic Party in his home state. Between 1969 and 1977 he was Vice Governor and thus Deputy Governors Frank Licht and Philip W. Noel .

Governor of Rhode Island

In 1976 Garrahy was elected as Noel's successor to James Taft as the new governor of his state. After he was re-elected four times in the following years, he was able to serve as governor between January 4, 1977 and January 1, 1985. In 1980 he was a member of the American delegation that traveled to the Soviet Union for disarmament talks . Garrahy was a member of several governors' associations. Domestically, his term of office passed without any particular incident.

After his governor ended, Garrahy became an independent business advisor. He also became a director at a shipyard and a railway company. John Garrahy has also served on several University of Rhode Island research commissions. He had five children with his wife Margherite DePietro.
