The University of Rhode Island , ( URI ), is the leading public university in the US state of Rhode Island . The main campus is in Kingston , Rhode Island. Additional locations are in Narragansett , Rhode Island (RI), Providence , RI and West Greenwich, RI. The URI has around 14,000 students. The URI is a “ land grant ”, “ sea grant ” and “ urban grant ” institution.
history
The university was originally founded as a Rhode Island State School of Agricultural Sciences under the name Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1892. Two years later the first 17 students graduated. The Morrill Act of 1862 was the first source of funding for the newly formed college. The resulting land grant was used to establish agricultural educational institutions in all states of the United States. URI later received funding from other federal education funds, the sea grants and urban grants . The first university location was the Oliver Watson Farm , which had housed an agricultural school since 1888. The farm can still be viewed today on the main Kingston campus . In 1909, the school was renamed Rhode Island State College and the range of subjects expanded. In 1951 the college was renamed the University of Rhode Island . The Board of Governors for Higher Education set up by the state governor has served as the university's board of directors since 1981 .

University partnerships
The International Engineering Program ( IEP ) is in charge of the conception of university partnerships in the field of engineering and business administration. In addition to other programs with other European universities, there is the possibility of a double diploma with the TU Braunschweig , which gives Braunschweig students the opportunity to acquire a Master of Business Administration or Master of Science . In return, the URI students study in Germany for some time. There is also a university partnership with the economics department of the HAW Hamburg .
University sports
The URI Sport Team are the Rams. Their colors are dark blue, light blue and white. Your teams kick u. a. in the NCAA Division I (Division 1-AA for American Football), the Atlantic 10 Conference, and the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association.
The university sports center finances 22 university teams and 17 sports clubs. Numerous facilities are available for university sports, including a. the 7700-seat Ryan Center basketball arena, 8000-seat Meade Stadium, Keaney Sports Hall, Mackal Athletics Center, Tootell Aquatic Center, Boss Ice Hockey Arena, URI Football Complex, Beck Field and URI Softball Field. Further facilities are open to all students, for example fitness studios, an indoor running track, swimming and plunge pools, 12 tennis courts, 2 beach volleyball courts.

Scriptwriter and producer Peter Farrelly's comedy Outside Providence (well-known productions: Dumb and Dumber and Crazy About Mary ) was shot in part on the University of Rhode Island's campus. For example, all private school sequences were filmed in Roosevelt Hall .
The university was also used as a filming location in the film Hachiko .
