action

Harry and Lloyd are friends and not particularly intelligent. With their hard-earned money, they want to open a worm shop called "Ich hab 'worms" together. In order to reach the destination quickly, Harry works as a dog groomer and Lloyd as a chauffeur . On one of his trips, Lloyd meets Mary Swanson and immediately falls in love with her. When he dropped Mary off at the airport, he watched her put down a suitcase and move on. Believing that she had forgotten him there, he storms into the airport, grabs it and tries in vain to bring it back to Mary. What he does not know, however, is that there is ransom in the suitcase for Mary's kidnapped husband, which was intended for the kidnappers. When Harry and Lloyd come home in the evening, they are both without a job. With their last money they want to do some shopping, but Lloyd is outwitted and robbed by an old woman in a wheelchair. With no work and no perspective, they decide to deliver the suitcase to Mary.

On the way to see Mary in Aspen , they have to deal with the police and various problems. Since they have no money, they put a few people in a truck stop; moreover, they have to deal with the kidnappers who cannot be identified as such. One of them makes sure that the two take him away. When they take a break, Harry and Lloyd season the kidnapper's meal with a chilli pepper . However, the kidnapper suffers from severe stomach discomfort and takes pills regularly. As he eats the spicy burger, he gets breathless and asks for his pills. Harry and Lloyd give him pills they found in his jacket pocket. However, these are rat poison , which the kidnapper wanted to mix with their food. He dies of poisoning, and the FBI goes to find them.

Once in Aspen, the two get into an argument. Harry blames Lloyd for her misery. There is a fight in which the suitcase is damaged. Only now do the two realize that they have traveled through the country with a suitcase full of money. You decide to spend the money, issue promissory notes on it, and keep looking for Mary. They meet her at a charity event . Harry starts a conversation with her and arranges to meet her, but without informing Lloyd. When he finds out what his best friend is up to, he incapacitates him with a laxative so that he can be with Mary himself. He tells Mary the story of the suitcase, and the two of them go to Lloyd's hotel to get it. Nicholas, an old friend of Mary's family, suddenly appears and threatens them with a gun. It turns out that he is behind the kidnapping of Mary's husband. When he tries to take the case with the money, he discovers that it only contains the promissory notes issued by Harry and Lloyd. Thereupon he ties Mary and Lloyd to the bed, Harry who joins him is hit in the chest with several bullets. When Nicholas is about to shoot Mary and Lloyd, Harry gets up and shoots Nicholas, but only hits the wall of the room. The FBI, which Harry had previously equipped with a bulletproof vest and gun in the hotel lobby , stormed the room and arrested Nicholas.

Harry and Lloyd eventually get to know Mary's husband and have to realize that they won't have a chance with her. So the two friends set off for home again. They seem to have realized that luck is simply not on their side when a bus full of bikini girls stops next to them looking for two guys to oil up for their tour. After Harry has shown the girls the way to the next place, where they are sure to find two suitable boys, and the bus pulls away again, Lloyd tries desperately to get the bus to stop again, but only to tell the driver that the next village is in the opposite direction.

criticism

The lexicon of international films describes dumb and dumber as "slapstick film that relies primarily on the grimace comedy of its main actors and otherwise offers a series of plenty of infantile gags that consciously push the limits of good taste". In addition, “a few bloody details” would make the film “questionable as a family entertainment”.

Roger Ebert wrote on December 16, 1994 that the plot was lame, but that didn't bother me, because Dumm and Dumber is one of those films that kindle gag fireworks, with some gags working, others not. The two main actors are the right cast for the film, which is shown by their interaction when both discuss their horrific lifestyle and their bizarre plans to improve it ("they discuss their grim lifestyle and their bizarre plans to improve it") .
