action

Bowling talent Roy Munson, who was trained by his father as a child, wins the amateur championship in 1979 in Iowa / USA , which enables him to switch to the professional field. In his first professional tournament, he wins the final against the arrogant Ernie McCracken, who dumps sugar into his tank in revenge and then takes advantage of Roy's financial hardship, as Roy has to invest the last of his money to repair the engine failure. The naive Roy has no idea that Ernie is behind it and lets himself be persuaded by him to fraud in a bowling center in order to get some money again, because he does not want to return home and stand in front of his parents as a failure. When the pair's scam is exposed, Ernie leaves Roy in the lurch and runs away with the money. The dupes mutilate Roy's right hand, which ends his bowling career.

17 years later, Roy leads a life as an alcoholic. Instead of his amputated hand, he now has a hook on the right and a rubber hand over it. He keeps his head above water by selling bowling accessories. When he meets the bowling talent Ishmael Boorg, Roy draws new hope. He wants to turn Ishmael into a professional, but the latter refuses because he lives in an Amish community and has to keep his hobby a secret from his family. Meanwhile, Roy threatens to be kicked out of his apartment if he doesn't finally pay his rent. The attempt to please his landlady by having her ambushed by a buddy and playing the savior in an emergency fails. The dizziness is exposed, and he has to have sex with the extremely ugly woman so that the police are left out of the game.

Roy learns of a bowling tournament in Reno, Nevada, with $ 1 million in prize money for the winner. He is convinced that Ishmael can win the tournament with his help and wants to share the prize money with him. He sneaks into Ishmael's community disguised as an Amish and is able to convince Ishmael to take part in the tournament after Ishmael learns from his father that the community is in debt with half a million dollars and is threatened with foreclosure. Ishmael now wants to gain more recognition from his family through a heroic deed. However, he withholds participation in the tournament and simply says that he wants to go on a mission trip with Roy.

Outside of the Amish community, Ishmael gets to know a new world in which he allows himself to be seduced into alcohol and cigarette consumption and disregards his religious principles. On the way to Reno he is trained by Roy. However, the two of them have to get some cash. Nowadays nobody falls for the old scam that Roy learned from Ernie. So the two of them get involved in a game of money on the millionaire Stanley's private bowling alley. Ishmael wins, but Stanley finds out that the two are broke and have been playing for money they don't even have. He rushes his bodyguard on her, but the two of them are able to flee together with his girlfriend Claudia and plenty of cash. Claudia takes the opportunity to run away from Stanley because he hits her.

Despite the differences between Roy and Claudia, Claudia joins them. She has the necessary money, which the two of them lack, and is of course also interested in a profit share if Ishmael should win the tournament. In numerous bowling centers the three can steal the money from the competitive people. But since Roy doesn't trust Claudia, he wants to leave Ishmael and the money. However, there is a fight between him and Claudia. Meanwhile, Ishmael sits down and tries to get to Reno alone, as he feels betrayed and exploited by Roy and Claudia.

The search for Ishmael leads through Roy's birthplace, where Roy is caught up with his past and reflects on his botched life. Claudia gives Roy the opportunity to start over together. They also reconcile with Ishmael when they pick him up in a nightclub, where he appears in a travesty show, and free him from the clutches of the dark club owner. In Reno they meet Ernie McCracken who provokes an argument. A scuffle ensues in which Ishmael breaks his hand and can no longer compete in the tournament. To protect Roy and Ishmael, Claudia disappears with Stanley and the money when he turns up in Reno.

Ultimately, Roy competes in the tournament, but loses very narrowly in the final to Ernie McCracken. However, because of his prosthetic hand, he has become the crowd favorite as the "rubber man" and is offered an advertising contract for half a million dollars from a condom manufacturer. He gives the money to the Amish community. Claudia flees from Stanley again and stands in front of Roy's door with plenty of cash, because she and Stanley had bet the three of them shared money when betting on Ernie. She begins a new life with Roy, and the two tell Ishmael's family that Ishmael has put them back on the right track. Roy comes off the bottle for good, and Ishmael is the hero of the community.

Reviews

“The protégé's religious background and the peculiarities of the bowling scene are the target of ridicule. A film determined by meaningless and aimless transgression of taboos, whose crude and ruthless humor turns the cited sports film standards against the grain. "

" Comedy from the ' Dumm und Dumber ' team - sometimes funny, often more stupid."

- TV feature film : issue 23/1996

"Stupid bowling comedy full of fecal humor: Give them the ball!"

- Cinema : issue 11/1996
