I, Myself & Irene (original title: Me, Myself and Irene ) is an American comedy film from the year 2000 . The leading roles are played by Renée Zellweger and Jim Carrey .

action

The Highway Patrol officer Charlie Baileygates, who serves with the Rhode Island State Police, has a somewhat naive nature and so it is natural for him that he alone brings up the three dark-skinned sons, who emerge from one of his wife's affairs, after she is over him the biological father of the boy leaves. All three have a high IQ and are very attached to their surrogate father, who is shamelessly exploited by his fellow men because of his good-natured character.

One day Charlie experiences a breakdown. As a result, he suffers from a split personality . His alter ego Hank Evans is considered unpleasant and daring to deal with. The treating psychologists attest to him that he created his second identity because he consistently avoids disputes and has been looking for an outlet to deal with the pent-up setbacks. The medication prescribed for him is supposed to help Charlie keep his alter ego Hank under control.

Charlie is assigned the task of bringing Irene P. Waters , who is wanted for a hit and run in New York, to New York. On the way there, he has to protect her from corrupt police officers who were put on her because of the illegal machinations of her ex-boyfriend, who wants her death.

On her road trip , during which Charlie loses his medication, Irene is repeatedly confronted with Charlie and his alter ego Hank. Although she doesn't like Hank, she befriends more and more Charlie, who is in danger of losing control of his body to Hank. Only when Charlie, who suffers from aquaphobia , has to save Irene, who has fallen into a river, from the floods and is confronted with his deepest fears, Charlie manages to defeat his split personality and he takes back complete control of his Body.

After Charlie and Irene end their adventure together, he asks her to become his wife. The two get married and she moves in with Charlie's house in Rhode Island .

background

The film was shot in Vermont and Rhode Island . Filming began on 11 May 1999 and ended on 27 July 1999. The production of the film cost about 51 million US dollars . The US grossed over $ 90.5 million, including over $ 24.2 million on the opening weekend. The film grossed around $ 149 million worldwide. The film celebrated its world premiere on June 15, 2000 in the USA. The film was shown in Switzerland from October 12, 2000. The film opened in German cinemas on October 19, 2000.

Bobby and Peter Farrelly announced that they first came up with the film title Me, Myself & Irene and then worked out a corresponding plot. The film is dedicated to the film critic Gene Siskel . Anna Kournikova can be seen in a cameo in the scene in which the police prepare to storm the motel room.

The German film title Ich both & Sie should be grammatically correct as it appears on the film poster and the film cover. However, the film came under the title Ich, both & them , in which it has an additional, meaning-distorting comma in the German-language distribution. On the German movie poster and movie cover also a heart was supplemented, the American US original one ampersand is. Different spellings were used on German film posters and in German cinema programs, which led the film title with and without a comma and used the word “both” in lower or upper case.

Film music

The score was written by Pete Yorn . His work was supplemented by songs by Steely Dan , which were reinterpreted by other artists for this film. These include Ben Folds Five , Marvelous 3 , Smash Mouth , Nash Kato , Wilco , The Brian Setzer Orchestra , Ivy , The Push Stars, and Billy Goodrum . Other famous pieces are the Wedding March by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Blowin 'in the Wind by Bob Dylan . There are also songs from XTC , Foo Fighters , Hootie and the Blowfish , Hardknox , Third Eye Blind , Tom Wolfe , The Dwarves , Cake , Bret Reilly , Alan Jay Lerner , Frederick Loewe and Gerardo Matos Rodríguez , and the band Jimmy Luxury and The Tommy Rome Orchestra even with three pieces.

Not all of the songs that can be heard in the film are included on the soundtrack. For example, the title Highway Patrol from the opening credits of the film and the title Fire Like This by Hardknox, to which Charlie “transforms” into Hank, are missing .

The song Hem of Your Garment by Cake is played when he first transforms into Hank .

Peter Farrelly is a big fan of the band Orpheus , whose song Can't Find The Time from 1968 can be found on the soundtrack as a cover version of Hootie & The Blowfish. When the title was recorded, Hootie & The Blowfish had incorrect lyrics. This mistake was only revealed by the songwriter at a show in which the band appeared on stage with the title.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews , the characters of the film are more developed than those in the comedy There's Something About Mary of the brothers Farrelly . Jim Carrey develops as an actor, his "funny energy" is used "efficiently". The film is 20 to 30 minutes too long, it is less funny in the end, but works well as a comedy.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a "[d] thirsty mixture of gangster and action film" with elements of a romantic comedy. In addition to the “brilliant main actor and some pointed socially critical approaches”, she also shows “clumsy genital jokes and a lot of nonsense”, which “takes the initially propagated tolerance towards outsiders ad absurdum”.

Gernot Gricksch judged in Cinema that I, both & them “don't quite keep” “what the predecessors promised Dumb and Dumber and Crazy About Mary ”. The film is "a very inconsistent sketch revue". With the different quality of the gags it is "constantly up and down". Gricksch also remarked that "after his brilliant performances on the Truman Show and as a moon man, Jim Carrey is no longer really seen as a fidgety philosopher".

Awards

Jim Carrey won the Teen Choice Award in 2000 and was nominated for the MTV Movie Award in 2001. Denney Pierce won the Taurus Award in 2001 . Jim Carrey, Renée Zellweger and Michael Bowman were nominated for the 2001 Blockbuster Entertainment Award .
