Blowin 'in the Wind is a folk song written by Bob Dylan . The melody comes from a traditional gospel song called No More Auction Block , to which Dylan wrote the lyrics in April 1962 in a New York folk pub.

Creation and publication

The song first appeared in 1963 on Dylan's second studio album The Freewheelin 'Bob Dylan on Columbia Records . The piece was released as a single in the same year , but could not place in the charts. Dylan had the text in 1962 in Sing Out! released.

The song was considered an anthem of the folk-rock movement . The lyrics deal with rhetorical questions . It became an anti-war anthem. The song was also often used as film music. Jon J. Muth illustrated a children's book for the lyrics in 2011 , the epilogue is by Greil Marcus .

Before Dylan's recording of the song came out, musician Lorre Wyatt had played it as his own at concerts. He later claimed that Dylan sold him the song for a few dollars. It was not until 1974 that Wyatt admitted his misconduct in an interview.

In 2004 the song was voted 14th of the 500 best songs of all time by the music magazine Rolling Stone .
