The moon man (original title: Man on the Moon ) is a feature film by Miloš Forman about the life of the US comedian Andy Kaufman . The leading role is played by Jim Carrey . The supporting roles are occupied by Danny DeVito , Courtney Love and Paul Giamatti , among others . The film music was partly contributed by REM (including " Man on the Moon ").
action
The young Andy Kaufman has dreamed of performing on stage since childhood. His first appearances in night clubs are not crowned with success.
But one night he convinced the audience with funny imitations and his portrayal as Elvis Presley . After the show, the manager George Shapiro comes to him and recognizes his talent. Andy claims that he's not a comedian, just a man who wants to captivate the masses. Soon after, he travels to Hollywood and George offers him a role in the sitcom " Taxi ". At first he refuses, but since it is his only chance to get into show business, he still accepts his role. However, he makes the condition that the nightclub singer Tony Clifton gets guest appearances. First of all, who Tony Clifton is until it turns out that it is Kaufman's alter ego or is played by Kaufman's friend Bob Zmuda.
In his role as Latka in the sitcom "Taxi" Kaufman conquered the hearts of television viewers, but he finds his role shameful. He disguises himself as Tony Clifton and sabotages the filming to get fired.
With the help of Zmuda, he makes a wrestling show in which he only fights against women. The first opponent is Lynne Margulies, with whom he falls in love. In his role he offends many and finally Jerry Lawler challenges him to a real fight. Kaufman injured his neck. The two meet again on the show Late Night With David Letterman , where they argue again and attack each other. It turns out the whole thing was just staged.
Kaufman and Margulies move into a new house, where he notices a lump on his neck, which he initially takes for a cyst or something similar. Shortly afterwards, he explains to his friends and family that he has a rare form of lung cancer .
Kaufman finally fulfills his dream and appears at Carnegie Hall, where he hands out presents and invites everyone for milk and cookies. His health deteriorated dramatically and he fled to the Philippines to see a "miracle healer" who, as Kaufman states, is only a fraud. At his funeral, he asked everyone present to sing This Friendly World with him .
The film ends with Tony Clifton performing a year later singing I Will Survive . The camera pans over neon images of Groucho Marx and Laurel and Hardy to Bob Zmuda in the audience and then to a picture of Kaufman.

Reviews
“After Larry Flynt , Milos Forman brings an icon of the seventies back to pulsating life. In the biography of the genius comedian Andy Kaufman, superstar Jim Carrey is in brilliant shape. The result: an ode to the liberating effect of unrestrained anarchy overflowing with enthusiasm and mischief. "
“The film carefully traces Kaufman's life, works out the extraordinary artist personality and recreates the absurd comedy numbers in an entertaining way. Milos Forman's recurring theme of the outsider who fails because of society is subject to another sensitive interpretation. Played brilliantly in the main role. "
