Hootie And The Blowfish , also spelled Hootie & The Blowfish , is an American alternative band that was founded at the University of South Carolina and plays a mainstream variant of blues rock .
history
The founding members were Darius Rucker , Dean Felber, Jim "Soni" Sonefeld and Mark Bryan. Her debut album Cracked Rear View (1994) was an instant success and has since reached 21 platinum status ( double diamond status ) in the US. This made it the best-selling album in 1995 and is still one of the 20 most successful albums in the US charts. Included on the album were the four hits Hold My Hand, Let Her Cry, Only Wanna Be with You and Time. In 1995 the band reached an out-of-court settlement with Bob Dylan over the unauthorized use of his lyrics to Only Wanna Be With You . In 1996 the band won a Grammy for "Best New Artist". In Europe, however, the band could not achieve comparable popularity.
In 1995, Hootie And The Blowfish contributed the song Hey Hey What Can I Do to Encomium , the tribute album for Led Zeppelin . Their cover version of the song I Go Blind , originally released as the soundtrack for the TV series Friends in 1995, was a surprise hit. This is all the more remarkable as this song was not included on either the Cracked Rear View album or the second album, Fairweather Johnson . Both songs, Hey Hey What Can I Do and I Go Blind were later released on the rarities / B-side collection Scattered, Smothered and Covered .
Already the second album could not match the success of the debut by a long way, but it sold over four million copies. The following three albums were increasingly unsuccessful, and there were no more hits. In August 2008 the band announced that Darius Rucker wanted to concentrate on his solo career. The band will no longer record albums and will only appear from time to time as part of their charity foundation. In fact, there have been occasional appearances since then, but for a long time no new material has been published. It wasn't until autumn 2019 that the band surprisingly released a new album called Imperfect Circle .
