Richard Dale Jenkins (born May 4, 1947 in DeKalb , Illinois ) is an American actor .

Life

Richard Jenkins graduated from Wesleyan University in Illinois, then moved to Rhode Island . He first worked in the management of the Trinity Repertory Theater and made his actor debut in the 1974 television film Feasting with Panthers . For his role in the comedy Flirting with Disaster (1996), in which Jenkins and Ben Stiller , Patricia Arquette , Téa Leoni and Alan Alda , he was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award . In the film drama Encounter of Fate (1999) he played a larger role alongside Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas , in the film Spurwechsel (2003) he played alongside Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson , in the film The Core (2003) alongside Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank .

From 2001 to 2005 he appeared in the television series Six Feet Under . In the 2005 comedy Dick and Jane , Jenkins played Frank Buscombe , a manager involved in the Globodyne machinations . The greatest success of his film career so far brought him the male lead in Tom McCarthy's drama A Summer in New York - The Visitor . For the part of the widowed college professor who befriends two illegal immigrants, he received critical acclaim and his first Oscar nomination for "Best Actor". For his participation in the fantasy film Shape of Water (2017) he was nominated in the category “Best Supporting Actor” for the Golden Globe Award and for the second time for an Oscar.

Richard Jenkins has been married to Sharon R. Friedrick since 1969 and the couple have two children.
