action
Five young people, the shy Dana, Jules and their friend Curt, Holden and Marty, who is always smoking weed, want to go on vacation in a lonely hut. Without their knowledge, however, both the preparations for the trip were meticulously planned by a secret organization or authority and the behavior of the students was skillfully influenced. They are observed by employees of the organization around the clock with cameras hidden in the house and manipulated by hidden mechanisms such as gas and hormone jets, while the employees of the enigmatic authority try to cover their apparent tension with humor and tastelessness. This is how the protagonists find the cellar, which is filled with strange ancient things. Reading aloud from a diary ultimately leads the organization to release a zombie family who set out to kill the youth. Jules' head is cut off and Marty (apparently) killed. The three remaining escape in the mobile home. When they want to pass through the tunnel, which is the only access to the area around the hut, it collapses due to a demolition triggered by the organization at the last second. When Curt tries to jump over a ditch with the motorcycle and get help, he crashes into an invisible force field. Dana and Holden realize they are trapped and return to the house in the RV. Holden is killed by a zombie. The camper falls into the water and Dana can save herself on the shore.
In the headquarters of the organization, the ritual carried out by the killings is declared over at that moment, since all but Dana were murdered or perished; Since Dana's death does not seem to be necessary for the success of her project, one begins to celebrate. But Marty, who surprisingly survived, suddenly appears and saves Dana from another zombie attack and escapes with her through a secret entrance that he discovered into the underground headquarters of the organization. There they encounter a variety of different horror creatures held captive by the organization. Panic breaks out among the staff, as the so-called ritual, which is held annually and serves to appease powerful creatures underground, has failed everywhere else and everything now depends on them. The ritual stipulates that the "slut" must die first and the "virgin" (Dana) must be the last to be left. It doesn't matter whether she dies or stays alive. When armed men march out to kill Marty and Dana, they, cornered, free the horror creatures who now roam the corridors of the headquarters killing people at random. Marty and Dana can penetrate the chaos to the bottom floor, where they meet the leader of the organization. From her they learn the truth about the hut in the forest and the whole project. According to this, the terrible “ancient gods” live in the earth, who must be appeased by the ritualized killing of four to five people so that humanity can continue to exist. The leader tries to persuade Dana to kill Marty in order to complete the ritual before sunrise. Dana is about to obey her. A fight breaks out in which Dana is badly wounded by a werewolf and the leader is killed by a member of the zombie family. Knowing that the ritual is not complete, Dana and Marty then await the imminent awakening of the gods after deciding that under the circumstances, humanity deserves to be wiped out. Then the underground temple room and hut collapse and a giant hand reaches up from the depths and lowers itself towards the camera.
production
The film was filmed from March to May 2009 in Vancouver , Canada . Joss Whedon co-wrote the script with Cloverfield - screenwriter Drew Goddard , who also made his directorial debut with The Cabin in the Woods . Goddard had previously worked with Whedon on the television series Buffy and Angel .
Whedon described the film as an attempt to revive the horror genre. He described the film as a loving hate letter for the genre .
“On another level it's a serious critique of what we love and what we don't about horror movies. I love being scared. I love that mixture of thrill, of horror, that objectification / identification thing of wanting definitely for the people to be alright but at the same time hoping they'll go somewhere dark and face something awful. The things that I don't like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into torture porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances. Drew and I both felt that the pendulum had swung a little too far in that direction. "
“On another level, it's a serious criticism of what we love and don't love about horror films. I love to be scared. I love this mix of thrill and horror, this objectification / identification thing that you clearly want people to be fine with but at the same time hope that they will go to a dark place and encounter something terrible. What I don't like are teenagers who act like idiots, the degeneration of horror films into torture porn and a long series of well-deserved sadistic punishments. Drew and I both thought the pendulum swung a little too far in that direction. "

reception
criticism
German critics rated The Cabin in the Woods almost entirely positive.
Filmstarts.de judged: " The Cabin in the Woods is so different, so intelligent and so entertaining that not only horror movie fans should not miss it!"
Gamona.de wrote: “Enough with the clichés. Less of a brave horror film than a flick that neatly breaks down the mechanisms of the genre. "
The film service wrote: “All this makes as little sense as the scripts whose outrageous models for the eye-catching carnage are allegedly targeted here. If you play with the viewing habits of the audience, at least the inner logic of the film should be preserved. What succeeds in "Scream" fails here completely. Goddard and Whedon want too much: a sci-fi, horror, monster and apocalyptic film, one for fans and critics who guess hidden film quotes, a reflection on the genre and, moreover, a not too complicated entertainment film with star potential. The result, however, is just one more genre film that is only fun if you don't think too hard about it. "
