When the poet environmentalist Albert encounters a conspicuous stranger three times in a row in completely different situations, he visits the existentialist detectives Bernard and Vivian, who are supposed to explain the significance of this coincidence to him. Her worldview of the cosmic connections is at the same time her way of working, and so every aspect of Albert's life is monitored and philosophically examined.
Above all, his working life seems to be the key to Albert's bad shape: He organized a coalition against building a swamp with the Huckabees department store , whose dashing sales manager Brad was only interested in the revamped company image. After Albert discovered the betrayal, Brad exposed him as a reactionary idealist and became the activists' darling.
In order to completely isolate Albert from the coalition, Brad also signs up for an existentialist screening with the detectives. Fireman Tommy is then put to the side of the shaken Albert . This is abandoned by his wife and child because of his search for meaning, while Albert is excluded from his own environmental organization. Now Albert and Tommy see the detectives' work as a failure and turn to the French nihilist Catherine, who shows her two disciples the futility and emptiness of the world - Catherine's affair with Albert leads to the split between Albert and Tommy and leaves both of them in despair .
Bernard and Vivian are now taking their work with Brad more seriously than he would like. Even his girlfriend, the Huckabees face Dawn, recognizes the uselessness of her modeling job and dresses deliberately unattractively as an expression of her longing for depth and connection that Brad does not give her. Even Brad becomes aware of his charming mask through the results of Bernard and Vivian: After his promotion to Vice-Boss of Huckabees , he collapses in front of the company management.
Brad experiences another blow at home: Albert, who sees Brad as the source of his calamity, is instigated by Catherine to set fire to Brad's house. The smoke almost suffocates Dawn, who is saved at the last second by fireman Tommy. At a coalition event, Brad learns of his resignation and Dawn's decision to reorganize her life with Tommy. Albert and Tommy get along again and discover that the truth lies neither with one nor the other school, but rather in the successive synthesis. In fact, it was also the case that Bernard, Vivian and Catherine had previously worked together, but a private separation caused by personal differences also led to a (false) divergence and polarization of world views.

The lexicon of international film wrote: “Behind the unconventional aesthetics of a dialectical comedy apparently composed of sheer contradictions, you can discover astonishing openness and honesty.” Rüdiger Suchsland says in the film magazine artechock that the performance of the actors alone is worth a visit to the film. He describes the film as "fascinatingly weird", as a "comedy of world views", which also offers clear insights into consumption and eco-madness, about people's fear of dying and their search for love.
