Jean Smart
Jean Smart (born September 13, 1951 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American actress .
Career
Jean Smart began her acting career in regional theater groups, including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival . After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Washington , she moved to New York. There she made her theatrical debut in Last Summer at Bluefish Cove , an off-Broadway play that earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination and a role on Broadway . As a result, she played the young Marlene Dietrich in Piaf in 1983 . Smart performed the role not only on stage but also on television, which made Hollywood aware of her. Thanks to this, she took part in several television productions and had her film debut in Flashpoint in 1984 - Die Grenzwölfe . She got her first big role in the HBO miniseries Maximum Security as Deputy Warden Dr. Allison Brody . Other film and television productions followed, in which she played with Hollywood greats Robert De Niro and Bruce Willis .
She became a nationally famous television star as one of three leading actresses in the series Designing Women , which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1993. Jean Smart celebrated further successes with the television series Frasier and 24 . She received an Emmy Award in 2000 and 2001 for her guest roles in Frasier . In 24, she starred in the fifth season and was involved in the sixth season with a guest role. In 2006 and 2007, Smart received Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Guest Role in a Drama Series for her role in 24 as Martha Logan , First Lady of the United States. Between 2007 and 2009 she was in the television series Samantha Who? to see. For the part of the mother of titular heroine Christina Applegate , she received the prize for best supporting actress in a comedy series at the 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards . She took on a leading role in the second season of the anthology series Fargo .
In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
Jean Smart has been married to the American actor Richard Gilliland since 1987 and has a son, Connor Douglas (* 1989) and a daughter, Bonnie Kathleen (* 2008), who they adopted in 2009.
