Dirty John is a US-based True Crime - series . The first season is about how con artist John Meehan wins over the successful but lonely businesswoman Debra Newell and marries against her daughters' wishes. When his sociopathic character and obvious lies about his past come to light, Debra tries to leave him, but falls back on his charm. When she finally turns away from him, he begins to terrorize her and her family.

The story tells of actual events in a fictionalized form and is based on the podcast of the same name by Christopher Goffard , a journalist for the Los Angeles Times . Eric Bana and Connie Britton play the leading roles, Juno Temple and Julia Garner play Newell's daughters.

The first season premiered on November 25, 2018 on US broadcaster Bravo and was released worldwide by streaming provider Netflix on February 14, 2019 . At the same time, the documentary Dirty John: The Dirty Truth was published , which lets those affected and other victims of John Meehan have their say.

Dirty John is to be continued as an anthology series. A second season was released in May 2020, also based on an actual case.

action

Debra Newell, a wealthy interior designer from Newport Beach, meets the supposed doctor John Meehan through an online dating service . They fall in love and move in together, but Debra's daughters Veronica and Terra are suspicious of John and research his past. Eventually Debra and John get married. Veronica tries to draw her mother's attention to John's past, but she doesn't want to know about it at first until she becomes suspicious herself and finds documents about his past in his drawer.

In a flashback one learns something about John's previous marriage to the nurse Tonia Sells, who helped him financially to train as a nurse specializing in anesthesia. However, John became increasingly aggressive towards his ex-wife, which led to the divorce. Meanwhile, Debra contacts a lawyer about wanting to leave John. When John suddenly in hospital inpatient is treated Debra takes this opportunity to dispel the house and move to an apartment. A little later she visits him in the hospital and confronts him, but he blames the medication he is taking. It turns out that John is addicted to the pain relievers he stole. In another flashback, we learn about Debra's sister and Toby's mother, Cindy, who was shot by her husband.

When John is released from the hospital, he and Debra move back into their house together. Debra's family is shocked and relationships continue to grow apart. She cares for John, who is physically very limited due to his medication. He promises Debra that he will get clean for her. In a flashback about John's release from prison, you can see that he lived in his sister's motor home for a while. Debra eventually finds more medication hidden in the house.

John behaves increasingly inappropriately towards Debra's daughters. Debra wants to leave him again and is also very suspicious of him. She contacts a lawyer and moves out of the house, but that makes John aggressive. She reports him to various crimes, which is unsuccessful for the time being. When he steals Debra's car and sets it on fire, he is arrested. However, the police cannot secure any evidence against him. Veronica catches John in front of her apartment, whereupon John flees and guards Terra's apartment that night because she is afraid for their safety. The next day, John finally attacks Terra with a knife, but she is able to get hold of the weapon and wound him. The injuries lead to his brain death . The prosecution is not bringing charges against Terra. Debra agrees to an interview with the Los Angeles Times to publicize the events.
