Julia Garner (born February 1, 1994 in the Bronx , New York City ) is an American actress .

life and career

Garner was in the area of Riverdale , a district in the Bronx , was born. Her mother is a therapist and her father is an art teacher. She started taking acting classes to overcome her shyness. She had her first roles in various short films in 2010 and 2011 before she took part in an open casting for Sean Durkin's thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene and was hired for the role of Sarah . For this role, she was nominated along with the rest of the cast at the Gotham Awards 2011 in the category Best Acting Ensemble. Her next role as Rachel , a 15-year-old pregnant Mormon , starred in Electrick Children alongside Rory Culkin and Liam Aiken . For this role she won the award for best actress at the Mumbai International Film Festival .

That same year she appeared in a supporting role in Maybe Better Tomorrow , the film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky 's novel of the same name . Chase wrote her short role in David Chase's directorial debut Not Fade Away (2012) especially for Garner. In 2013 she played one of the leading roles in the horror films We Are What We Are and The Last Exorcism: The Next Chapter . The former is a US remake of the Mexican horror film We Are What We Are (2010) and the latter is the sequel to The Last Exorcism (2010). Also in 2013, she took over in 2013 alongside Alex Wolff and Brendan Fraser in the comedy HairBrained , which was part of the Brooklyn Film Festival had its premiere in 2013, the main role of Shauna . Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For , the sequel to Sin City from 2005 , was released in September 2014. There she can be seen alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the young stripper Marcy .

Since 2017 Garner can be seen in a leading role as a young criminal in the television series Ozark . She won an Emmy in 2019 for her portrayal of "Ruth Langmore" .

Garner has been married to US musician Mark Foster since the end of 2019.
