David Chase (2015)

David Chase (* 22. August 1945 in Mount Vernon , New York as David DeCesare ) is an American screenwriter , director and producer . He became known in particular as showrunner of HBO - television series The Sopranos (1999-2007), for which he, among others, with several Emmy Awards was excellent.

Life

The Italian-American David Chase grew up as the only child of his parents in Clifton , New Jersey . In his youth he often had arguments with his constantly "bad-tempered" father and his "hysterical" mother. In addition, he struggled with depression, which he later processed in his scripts for the Sopranos . In later interviews, Chase relativized the statements about his childhood; despite everything, this was a wonderful time.

In 1963 he graduated from high school and began studying at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem , North Carolina . Here his depression worsened and he often slept up to 18 hours a day. After two years he moved to New York University and planned a career in the film business, which again led to arguments with his parents.

In 1968 he married his high school sweetheart Denise Kelly and moved with her to California, where he attended the School of Film at Stanford University . He completed this course in 1971 with a Magister Artium .

He then had to work on the production of soft porn films, but then got in touch with Universal Studios through his Stanford professor Janet Volcker . After his first jobs for smaller television productions, he worked as a story consultant and later as a scriptwriter for the horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker from 1974 .

From 1976 to 1979 he wrote numerous episodes as the lead author of the television series Detective Rockford - a call is enough , for which he also worked as a producer. In 1988 he wrote the scripts for the television series Almost Grown with Eve Gordon and Timothy Daly , which flopped despite good reviews and was discontinued after only one season. In 1994 he produced the last two seasons of the television series Alaska, of all things .

He was conceived in 1999 with that of his knowledge, multi-award winning HBO - television series The Sopranos that of a fictional Mafia family in New Jersey is. The series is considered a milestone in television history and has now entered American pop culture .

In the scripts for the series, Chase repeatedly processed autobiographical elements such as people, towns, schools or universities. So based on the Nancy Marchand played role of pesky mother Tony Sopranos largely on his own mother to the Chase also had a difficult relationship. Chase also directed the first and last episodes of the series . Occasionally he also had cameos . His daughter Michele DeCesare , who emerged from his marriage to Denise Kelly, played the role of Hunter Scangarelo in the series .

After the end of the Sopranos , Chase took a career break of several years and then made his debut as a director of a feature film in 2012 with the drama Not Fade Away . Here he worked again with his Sopranos star James Gandolfini .
