Nancy Marchand
Nancy Marchand (born June 19, 1928 in Buffalo , New York , † June 18, 2000 in Stratford , Connecticut ) was an American actress .
Life
As the daughter of a pianist, Marchand discovered her enthusiasm for art and acting at an early age. In order to overcome her shyness, she was sent to drama school at the age of 10. She studied the works of Shakespeare and other playwrights and theater studies at Carnegie Mellon University . After graduating in 1949, she received an engagement at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge. It was there that she met the actor Paul Sparer (1923–1999). In 1950 the couple moved to New York City to play on Broadway . The two married a year later. The couple, who had been married for 48 years until Sparer's death, had three children together.
Nancy Marchand was best known for her television roles as Livia Soprano in the HBO series The Sopranos , as newspaper owner Margaret Pynchon in the series Lou Grant (1977-1982), as Dorothea Dix in Torches in the Storm (1986) and as Maude Larrabee in Sabrina (1995). For her supporting role as the annoying mother of Mafia boss Tony Soprano in The Sopranos , she received a Golden Globe , an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series and, together with the ensemble of the Sopranos, the Screen Actors Guild Award in the category Best Acting Ensemble in a television series - drama .
Marchand died of lung cancer the day before her 72nd birthday .
