Grandma is a US tragicomedy by Paul Weitz from the year 2015 with Lily Tomlin and Julia Garner in the lead roles . It premiered on January 30, 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival . In Germany, the film was released directly on DVD and Blu-ray on March 17, 2016 .

The film is told in six episodes and is about Elle, a lesbian author whose life partner has recently passed away. Elle has ended a brief relationship with the much younger Olivia when her granddaughter Sage shows up and asks for her help. Sage is pregnant and needs money to have an abortion . Elle wants to help her, but can't give her any money because she doesn't have any herself. Together they drive off in Elle's car to raise money from friends.

The film received mostly positive reviews. On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 77/100 based on 37 reviews, and on Rotten Tomatoes , 92 percent of the 147 reviews were positive.

The film service means “the sensitive, well-cast tragic comedy” finds “a balance between amusing moments and serious moments” and “manages to negotiate big questions in a limited space”.

Grandma was named one of the Top Ten Independent Movies of 2015 by the National Board of Review . He was also nominated for the GLAAD Media Award and the Dorian Award . The lead actress Lily Tomlin received nominations for the Golden Globe ( Best Actress - Comedy or Musical ) and for the Critics' Choice Movie Award , among others .
