Mary Jean "Lily" Tomlin (born September 1, 1939 in Detroit ) is an American actress , comedian , writer and producer . She has received the Golden Globe Award , the Emmy , the Grammy and the Tony Award , among others .

Career

Lily Tomlin is the daughter of a factory worker. She has a younger brother who was born in 1943. Tomlin studied medicine at Wayne State University , but discovered her interest in acting early on and made her first stage experience as a stand-up comedian . In 1966 she worked as a secretary for a casting director on television and in this way came to her first television appearance as an entertainer on the Gary Moore Show . With her impersonation of the operator Ernestine in the television series Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In , Tomlin became known throughout the US in 1969.

Tomlin's film career began in 1975 with Robert Altman's Nashville . In the movie Why actually ... don't we kill the boss? She starred in 1980 alongside Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton , in the 1988 film Two by Two alongside Bette Midler and in the 1992 film Shadow and Fog alongside Woody Allen . Tomlin can be seen in both comedic and dramatic television roles; In addition, she stood in the 1970s and 1980s as an entertainer in male and female roles on the theater stage, often with texts by her friend Armistead Maupin . The solo shows were produced by her then partner and later wife, screenwriter Jane Wagner , who also directed Tomlin's 1978 film From Moment to Moment with John Travolta . Another film was The Incredible Story of Mrs. K. by Joel Schumacher , a satire on the American way of life and the traditional housewife and mother role.

Tomlin became involved in homosexual issues at an early age . For the documentary The Celluloid Closet - Captured in the Dream Factory , on whose screenplay Maupin was involved, she did the voiceover and took care of the financing beforehand. She has been campaigning for the rights of gays and lesbians for years . In 1980 Tomlin sang the song The Last Duet with Barry Manilow . Lily Tomlin's one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe was filmed by Jane Wagner in 1991 after its great success on Broadway.

Tomlin has been dubbed by a wide variety of speakers over the years, but mostly by Marianne Lutz . From 2012 to 2013 she starred as Lillie Mae on the ABC sitcom Malibu Country . On December 31, 2013 Tomlin married her longtime partner Jane Wagner. Tomlin has been one of the leading actresses in the Netflix comedy series Grace and Frankie since 2015 . For her portrayal of Frances "Frankie" Bergstein she was nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe , among others .
