Damages is an American lawyer series that first aired on FX in June 2007 . In German-speaking countries, the series was first seen on April 21, 2008 on the channels ORF 1 and SF2 . The first broadcast on the German broadcaster Kabel1 followed a week later .

The English word " Damages " is a legal term and translates as " damages ", but also "damage" and is therefore a play on words.

In Germany, the first season only reached 0.34 million viewers, which meant an average of 1.8 percent market share. In the USA, the ratings were also below average, but the station still commissioned a second and third season. After long negotiations it was confirmed that the US broadcaster DirecTV will take over the series for at least two more seasons and will initially produce 20 new episodes. As it became known in April 2012, the fifth season is also the last of the series.

action

First season

At the beginning of the series, Ellen Parsons, a young lawyer, can be seen walking through the streets half-naked and covered in blood. The next moment she is sitting in an interrogation room in silence. She is accused of murdering her former fiancé, David Connor. The action of the first season takes place before these scenes. In the first episode, which begins half a year before David Connor's death, the aspiring Ellen Parsons gets a new job with the independent lawyer Patty Hewes. This has been trying for some time to prove the billionaire Arthur Frobisher corruption in stock market transactions. She works with his former employees who have lost most of their property through him.

Over time, Patty Hewes' law firm learns that Ellen Parson's fiancé's sister, Katie Connor, may be helpful as a witness. Five years earlier - in 2002 - she had received an order from Frobisher to cook for an event. She is said to have seen him with a stock exchange officer this weekend. While Ellen Parsons takes care of the case self-sacrificingly, it turns out that Hewes only hired her to get to Katie Connor and fellow witness Gregory Malina. On the other side is Arthur Frobisher with his lawyer Ray Fiske, who want to prevent a lawsuit. Frobisher bribes possible witnesses and has some of them killed as well.

Towards the end of the first season, Malina is killed in a car accident. He had previously recorded a video that he gave to Katie Connor. This should clarify the whole case of Frobisher. Meanwhile, Ray Fiske kills himself in front of Patty Hewes after he was blackmailed from her with incriminating photos that reveal his affair with Malina. Also, the relationship between Ellen and David is failing. Ellen packs her things and stays with Patty Hewes, who wants to drive to her beach house over the weekend, shortly afterwards Katie Connor appears in David's apartment and hands him the video of Gregory Malina. When Frobisher finds out the evidence is in Ellen and David's apartment, he sends two men there to get the videotape. When Frobisher's agent arrives at the apartment, David Connor is alone. Since he refuses to tell them where the video is, they kill him. A short time later, Ellen is also attacked in Patty's apartment and can only protect her life by stabbing the attacker in self-defense and fleeing covered in blood. From this point on, the flashbacks to the present story close up. Patty Hewes puts Ellen on bail so that she can be released and in return give her the incriminating videotape. Hewes can both convince the prosecutor that Parsons is innocent and get Frobisher to agree to an out-of-court settlement, in which he loses almost all of his fortune. Contrary to an obligation of confidentiality, Hewes hands over the videotape to the district attorney responsible for Ellen's case for use against Frobisher in a criminal case. At the end of the first season, Larry Popler, a former Frobisher employee, carried out a revenge assassination attempt. Ellen now realizes that Patty is behind the attack on her, and she is now working with Hollis Nye and the FBI, which has been investigating the lawyer for a long time, undercover against her boss Patty.

Charisma

United States

In the US, the series first ran on June 24, 2007 on the cable channel FX Network . Although initially only one season was planned for unknown reasons, the production of the second and third seasons was confirmed; both seasons will have 13 episodes each. This decision was made because of the success and some awards. Due to the writers' strike by the US Writers Guild of America and the surprising continuation, the second season was broadcast between January 7, 2009 and April 1, 2009. On December 1, FX announced that the third season would start airing January 25, 2010. After the quotas no longer met their requirements, the series will henceforth be broadcast on the provider DirecTV . The station then had a fourth and a fifth season of the series produced for the time being. The broadcast of the fourth season began on July 13th and ended on September 14th, 2011. As was announced in April 2012, the fifth season, which started on July 11th, 2012, is also the last. The last episode aired on September 12, 2012.

German-speaking area

In German-speaking countries, the broadcasters Kabel eins , ORF eins and SRF Zwei secured the rights to the series. The broadcast of the (uncut) episodes began on April 21, 2008 on ORF 1 and SRF two. A week later, the German broadcaster Kabel Eins started broadcasting the series in double episodes; the last three episodes of the first (thirteen-part) season were broadcast on June 2, 2008. According to a press spokeswoman for the station, the broadcast of the second season is still unclear, as the first brought bad ratings. In Switzerland, the second season was broadcast from January 5, 2010 to February 10, 2010 in high definition and in two-channel sound on the HD Suisse channel; the second season followed on the Swiss broadcaster SRF Zwei from March 3, 2010. On the broadcaster sixx , the second season ran in double episodes from the end of June 2010; after that, the third season was broadcast from the beginning of August. The fourth and fifth seasons were shown on pay TV channel Glitz * between June 27 and October 31, 2013.
