Debra Monk (born February 27, 1949 in Middletown , Ohio ) is an American actress and singer .

Life

Debra Monk attended Wheaton High School in Silver Spring , Maryland . She graduated from Frostburg State University in 1973. In 1975 she received her Masters of Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas . During her college days, Monk took an interest in acting and moved to New York, but had to wait a long time for the breakthrough and worked as a waitress. With a self-written role in the musical Pump Boys and Dinettes , which was a surprise success, she first attracted attention in 1982. In 1993 she received the Tony Award for her appearance in the play Redwood Curtain . Her performances in productions by William Inges Picnic (1994), the musical Steel Pier (1997) and Rupert Holmes ' and John Kander's Musical Curtains (2007) subsequently earned her three other Tony Award nominations. She received an Obie Award in 2000 for her appearance in The Time of the Cuckoo as a junior teacher who falls in love with Italy .

Monk entered the film and television business relatively late. She made her film debut in the comedy Magic Times from 1992, when she was 43 years old. Since then she has played supporting roles in well-known Hollywood films such as The Bridges on the River , In Order of the Devil , Seven Damn Long Days and Demolition - Love and Life . She is particularly often cast for matronly roles, often as the mother, aunt or neighbor of the main characters. However, she has also played policewomen, businesswomen and doctors. Monk received an Emmy Award in 1999 for her recurring supporting role as Katie Sipowicz in the crime series New York Cops - NYPD Blue . Between 2006 and 2011 she was recurring in the hospital series Grey's Anatomy as the mother of TR Knight's character Dr. O'Malley to see.
